For as long as I can remember, my mother filled our childhood home with a wide array of inviting scents. It only took a few seconds for a new guest to arrive before they commented on how lovely the house smelled. As I got older, it became a personal mission to create my own warm and inviting space. Eventually, I realized those scented plug-in cartridge-like chemical cubes available at my local big box stores were not the right option for me.
Warming essential oils is a great way to add a clean fragrance to your home without the added chemicals. All you need is an oil warmer, beeswax tea lights, matches, and your favorite organic essential oil(s).
Essential oils are volatile, which is why you don't want to use them with direct heat. This means that even some candles that claim to be clean burning may not actually be once the flame reacts with its oils. Warming uses an indirect heat source (tea light + warmer) to heat the oils and disseminate its fragrance throughout your space.
I use beeswax tea lights (which I buy in bulk), because they are naturally clean burning and the delicate honey scent is the perfect undertone to any blend. As an added bonus, the clear cups containing each tea light are recyclable after use.
Not only do I warm essential oils for the cozy and relaxing atmosphere but also for pain management, muscle soreness while adjusting to a new workout routine, respiratory issues after being exposed to formaldehyde from countless hours in gross lab, and immune support while recovering from a cold.
If you're worried about safety, the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy is a great place to start. Please note that many should be avoided if pregnant, because the oils have the ability to cross the placenta. I also do not consume them orally due to their potential to wipe out essential gut flora and other negative effects. No matter your circumstance, please consult your physician before introducing an essential oil, especially if there are pets or little ones at home. I know that may sound excessive, but it's important to err on the side of caution with these things. Safety first!
Once you get the OK, don't worry about amassing an entire collection of oils. Just start with the one that sounds good to you while, of course, avoiding any on the list your doctor has deemed unsafe for your particular circumstance. I was initially drawn to lemon without knowing its benefits. Now, it has become a staple.
To start, fill the cup of your warmer with water (I prefer distilled) about halfway. Add a few (2-3) drops of essential oil(s) and top with water until just below full. Essential oils are potent, so a little goes a long way and should be used sparingly (in concentration and frequency). Cost per use makes this a budget-friendly and non-toxic option, which is always a good thing.
I buy most of my oils from Mountain Rose Herbs and, on the rare occasion I can't wait for shipping, Whole Foods (Aura Cacia Brand - only from their organic line). Any oil warmer made with a receptacle and material to withstand the heat of a tea light will work just fine.
